I’m a blogger too and the struggle is real. I have a travel blog, Life in Rural France, that’s seen plenty of ups and downs in the last 12 months. One minute things are going swimmingly and the next my traffic has taken a nose dive.
So I started to think of ways I could make money that weren’t reliant on Google pushing traffic to my blog. How could I earn from those visitors who have already been to my blog and liked what they saw?
And, of course, I immediately thought of my email list. Naturally, I have a box that pops up for people to sign up for my newsletter, but it’s not the sexiest thing ever. So I brainstormed some ideas for lead magnets that might work.
They needed to be things I could promote on Pinterest, on my Podcast and on my other social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.
So let’s dive in and see what ideas I’ve implemented that might work for you too.

Not only is it crucial for nurturing your audience, enhancing reader loyalty and building a community around your blog, but it helps with the many Google updates and changes we’ve been seeing in the last 12 months.
It allows you to dig into the audience you already have without being completely reliant on new traffic from Google or other platforms.

I can’t stress how important it is to understand the readers of your blog and their preferences before creating a lead magnet because it ensures that the content you offer is relevant and valuable to your audience.
Essentially, a lead magnet’s success hinges on its ability to meet the specific needs or solve the particular problems of your readership. When you understand your audience’s interests, you can tailor your lead magnet accordingly.
In the travel niche, for example, knowing whether your audience leans towards luxury travel or budget backpacking can significantly influence the type of lead magnet you create.

5 Lead Magnet Ideas For Blogs To Turn Traffic Into Subscribers
I’ve tried all five of these lead magnet ideas for my travel blog and they work. I’ve listed them in order of their effectiveness.
Top of the pile, which was no surprise really, are the quiz lead magnets I’ve created.
No. 1 A Quiz For Your Blog
I have a few different ones but my main quiz helps people decide where in France will best suit their tastes. This is quite an in-depth quiz with four different results giving them a region in Southwest France.
As part of the results they get some history of the region, what the weather is like, the food and drink you’ll find there and some suggestions of what to see and do.
It then connects to my ConvertKit account and puts them into an email sequence that gives them more information on the region including tours, hotels and more.
It’s a great way to get my affiliate posts in front of them without it being too obvious and it converts really well.
I have another one helping them choose a wine tour in Bordeaux based on their wine knowledge and what types of wine they enjoy.
This is a shorter quiz that I created really quickly and each result leads to three tour recommendations using my affiliate links. Again, this is a great way to make some money that isn’t reliant on ads but focuses on my affiliates.
Quizzes are brilliant and you can be so specific with them and give information based on how they answer certain questions, which I love.

No. 2 Survey Your Audience
Now this might sound very similar to a quiz, which it is, but the strategy behind it is different. Often it’s good to hear what your audience likes from the horse’s mouth, so to speak, and a survey does this really well.
I did one recently when I was putting ideas together for my podcast. I had a survey within my post announcing the podcast that asked people for their input on what they’d like to hear on the podcast.
It killed two birds with one stone as it collected email addresses, but also gave me ideas for new content for the blog and podcast based on what they told me.
I’d rather be writing content I know my audience wants rather than guessing and a survey gets them involved.
Plus, I find my readers love any opportunity to give me their opinion, so why not embrace it and get them to spill the beans on the things they love and those they don’t?

Another great way to build your email list is to offer discount codes for the affiliates you have a relationship with in exchange for their email address. This is a different type of lead magnet that doesn’t take much to set up at all.
Simply come up with a good hook, create a box on your website with a button which connects to a form in your CRM and you’re all set.

I’ve got to be honest, unless your guide is very specific and hits on a well-researched pain point it probably won’t work. People want quick fixes and if they have to wade through a whole load of info in an eBook, it will probably end up gathering virtual dust.
Now obviously for some niches, such as food blogs, longer guides or recipe eBooks work well. But I know for the travel niche they don’t work as well.
Instead, I’d recommend something quick and easy like a checklist with ideas they can implement or try straight away.

This works well for blogs and podcasts. It’s where you create extra content that you can only see if you’re signed up or if you pay to see it.
